Taking Care Of Corvette

Engine Oil Change: Why care if it’s in your car?

Engine oil has a dual purpose: to lubricate all the moving parts in the engine to prohibit friction; and, to move heat away from the hottest parts of the engine. If oil is not running through your car’s engine, the moving parts of your engine will grind together creating so much heat that they’d melt together. And there is no way of getting them apart. Changing the oil is important because the oil gets contaminated over time and breaks down either due to heat, dirt, debris and other particles, and looses its effectiveness. Mechanics recommend that the oil be changed every 3,000 miles or every six months, depending on which occurs first. If you look at your owner's manual, you might see that it mentions changing the oil every 7,500 miles or once a year but that is only for normal driving conditions. And apparently what we call normal driving conditions are really severe driving conditions.

Tires

These four babies are what your life is riding on. To keep your tires in tiptop shape, you’ll need to have them rotated, aligned and balanced. Rotating the tires allows all the tires to get worn out evenly to ensure you have a smooth ride and extend the length of the tires. Some mechanics recommend rotating tires every 3,000 to 4,000 miles whether they show wear or not, while others 6,000 to 7,500. Check with your car’s owner’s manual. It can sometimes be done simultaneously when the oil is changed.

Wheel alignment is just making sure that all four tires are inline with each other and they all touch the ground at the proper angle. With everyday driving, bumps can knock the tires out of alignment and cause your car to handle terribly or the tires to wear out unevenly. One way to know if your tires need to be aligned is if the car drifts to one side while driving or even while braking.

Balancing tires is just what it sounds like, keeping the weight balanced on your tires.

Other Maintenance

There are other maintenance services that need to be done to your car such as fuel injection, transmission flush, belt and battery replacement and so on. But you’re going to have to look into those on your own. You should always check your owner’s manual to see when your car is supposed to get a regular tune up. During a tune up, all the systems that contribute to operating the car are checked. Think of it as a physical for the car. Getting tune-ups regularly will prevent you from spending hundreds of dollars later on.
